When I was asked to write this article, I gave some thought to K-Lite. There was one thing that intrigued me about it: it supports both.mpg files as well as MKV files as container for playable media. This already sounds like a good thing, considering how many times I’ve been on the receiving end of transcoding for hardware support.

But once I had installed the package, I was surprised by how clean and straight forward the install is, especially compared with the mess that is the CoreAVC installation process and the pain involved in adding the various components.

It’s actually very similar to the process I went through with the CoreAVC package, with the main difference being that it is based on K-Lite, which means it’s a bit more basic than CoreAVC in some ways, and is lacking some features.

It’s also based on a 64-bit edition of Windows and has taken away from the install process the individual plasmoids for each component, instead providing an overall system installer that provides all the components, along with a program for managing these components. So in other words: K-Lite has a good core install with all the components that work well. From there, you can use the Manager program to enable or disable individual components. And if you want to use it for a small screening application, that’s cool, too.
