Kaspersky’s product line has improved over time, and Kaspersky Antivirus, along with the Kaspersky Security Cloud Free product, remain its best solutions and the top two Editors’ Choice pick for antivirus in its product line. Even so, Kaspersky has a shaky reputation as it comes under increasing fire from the US government, foreign agencies, and many security and privacy experts. Better to investigate the organization than its products, many find, given the recent revelations of the company’s misdeeds.

But using the right antivirus, even from a known shady organization, can help alleviate some of the risk. Even if Kaspersky really is guilty of illegal spying, most people won’t suffer much if their email is protected. And many people we interviewed who don’t use a dedicated antivirus solution manage to get by on the strength of their firewall software. So Kaspersky Antivirus’ sole purpose is to offer the usual complement of antivirus, plus online privacy security, DDoS protection, and spam and malware blocking.

Smart Assistance: Smart Assistance is one of Kaspersky’s best security features, offering real time protection, identifying potential threats and offering help in stopping the infection from spreading further. Smart Assistance can be used in conjunction with the Noxon Threat Genome Project (NX-TG). When Kaspersky identifies a threat – it notifies the user to take some immediate steps to solve it. So if your computer has been infected by a new malware variant, for example, the new threat is immediately identified by Kaspersky Lab, allowing you to then safely delete it.

Zero-day protection: Kaspersky boasts its anti-Zero Day protection technology, which allows Kaspersky to detect and protect against zero-day malware. Kaspersky’s extensive index of zero-day threats helps Kaspersky continuously update its security database to stop malware spread, so it can protect users even when they are being targeted with new and unforeseen attacks.

Kaspersky offers a cloud-based virus scanning engine, as opposed to the local scanning engine offered by Sophos. The cloud-based scanning engine means that Kaspersky AV can be up to date and current with the latest malware out there, while offline scanning with Sophos is much more limited.

But the fun really begins when you throw the power of behavioral analysis into the mix. In this model, you can use Kaspersky’s data sources to investigate suspicious behavior and actually identify malicious code that’s hiding inside otherwise innocent-looking content.

With this model, Kaspersky can detect more of the malware that it can’t see with heuristic scanning, and even detect malware that “isn’t on the radar of traditional signature-based antivirus scanners.

The program includes excellent heuristic-based detection and behavior analysis in a system that’s designed with Windows 10 and various Windows versions in mind. In addition, the product has data-based detection capabilities. For example, when it detects certain URL attachments, it can narrow down the data and file type that it’s looking at, making it easier to identify files and track down malware. In February 2017, nearly two years after the release of Kaspersky Internet Security 2018, the company rolled out an even better version of its flagship product. In addition to some updated features and a new identity, Kaspersky 2017 now includes a new business unit dedicated to mobile antivirus. Now, Kaspersky has doubled down on its commitment to mobile security, rolling out a robust antivirus solution for Android users.

If you already own Kaspersky Internet Security for Windows, the Kaspersky 2018 interface is pretty familiar. That’s because the same interface was introduced back in 2016. It’s also customizable, meaning you can set the theme and layout to your liking. That may not sound like a big deal, but it makes the game-changing aspects of Kaspersky’s new mobile security more obvious. Look for those key tweaks soon.

The latter part of its slogan, “Protecting People and Businesses Around the World”, is a call to people rather than businesses; it’s a message that some people may find patronising. Certainly, there are already plenty of reputable Android antivirus apps that do a good job of protecting people from ‘out there’ threats, including Norton and McAfee. But do these apps really protect people from viruses, the type that infect computers? They likely do.

Kaspersky antivirus is well known for its ability to detect known viruses and a range of other malware, but it’s also worth mentioning how it handles zero-day threats. Companies can spend days trying to work out whether a new malicious app is an actual threat, and so how to deal with it. Kaspersky claims to detect 8,000 to 10,000 zero-day threats per day, and will update its database so that the latest threats do not slip through the net.

Kaspersky is just like any other antivirus – although the subject of this review, Kaspersky AntiVirus Cloud, is focused on security solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises. You’ll find this antivirus service built upon the same robust technology found in the main Kaspersky antivirus offerings. There are two key differences, however, when you buy Kaspersky’s Cloud antivirus services. First of all, it’s aimed at business and corporate users, mainly those who need the most robust malware protection and network security. This antivirus is included with most of Kaspersky’s end-user products. Second, it’s the first antivirus to accept McAfee’s Safe Connect technology for remote access. Safe Connect will enable you to access the cloud service from anywhere, including the cloud.

To start, the app’s user interface is clean, with no superfluous icons, and the front page is empty except for the three tabs. The main screen offers an overview of all active and queued scans. You can view detailed reports in a Web browser, and there’s also a standard list view (Kaspersky calls it “skimmed”).

The user guide recommends opening it once, and then closing it. We found that a pair of subsequent scans in the same browser session took a total of five minutes to finish. There’s no way to stop scans in progress, so if you just want to make sure your computer’s clean, your best bet is to close the app, reboot your computer, and use another browser to open Kaspersky. In some cases, the app does require you to restart your computer after you close it, so be sure to wait a few minutes.

That’s fine if you know what to look for—but how do you know that you haven’t done something to trigger a scan? On the desktop app, you can find a “System tray” icon in the lower-right corner of the application window. Opening it displays the components list for the software. The “AntiVirus – System Tray Icon” reads “Protect your PC”—but there’s no way to tell whether the next scan is going to be queued, a scheduled scan, or something else.

Kaspersky AntiVirus Features

The four main antivirus features of Kaspersky’s AntiVirus are Trend Micro, Prevention and Data Loss Recovery, System Watcher, and the Online Threat Blocker.

The Trend Micro feature is used to look at a database of past incidents and negative occurrences against the Kaspersky database, to identify possible threats to your current security and ensure that you remain as safe as possible.

Kaspersky’s Second Chance feature employs real-time scanning to identify malicious activities and block them as soon as possible. Upon detecting a threat, the Virus Protection Module digs deeper to locate and kill the virus. The outstanding detection rate Kaspersky’s anti-virus boasts makes this a highly sought feature.

The additional Kaspersky features available include the Protection Console, Smart Scan, and the Safe Search. We already explored the first two extensively in our prior article. If you are interested to know more about the other three, check out our whitepaper – Kaspersky’s Essential Security Features.
